My Mission

“My personal mission is to bring joy, alleviate suffering and make a positive difference in other people’s lives.”

Dr Eugene Tan Dermatologist Singapore

My personal mission is embedded in the heart of everything that I do. It really makes me happy to make other people happy, touch a person’s life or to simply make a difference. And that is why I enjoy public speaking, teaching, mentoring, giving advice and helping other people. It also naturally motivates me to be a patient-centered doctor.

My Work

“I am fortunate to be in a multi-faceted job that I truly enjoy. There is never a dull moment in the clinic!”

I am a senior consultant dermatologist based at the National Skin Centre in Singapore. At NSC, I currently serve as the Chief Clinical Informatics Officer, Chief of the Photodermatology Unit and Head of the Teledermatology Workstream. After completing my dermatology training at the National Skin Centre, I underwent advanced fellowship training at the renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, under the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP). Apart from general dermatology, I have special interests in psoriasis and photodermatology (a specialized field of dermatology which encompasses light-sensitive skin disorders, sun protection, phototherapy and photodynamic therapy).

I am fortunate to be in a job that I truly enjoy, spending the bulk of my working hours in the clinic helping people across all age groups to diagnose and manage diverse types of skin disorders. In addition, I see people with hair and nail problems, as well as sexually transmitted infections. There is never a dull moment in the clinic!

Part of my time is devoted to research, teaching, administration and healthcare information technology. As the CCIO in NSC, I work with a multidisciplinary team of colleagues to contribute to the maintenance and continual improvement of information technology systems both in NSC and the National Healthcare Group. I have a passion for teaching and am grateful to have the privilege of sharing my clinical knowledge and experience at multiple platforms, both locally and regionally.

My Education

“I am grateful to my teachers past and present, and strongly believe in paying it forward by mentoring and inspiring the next generation.”

I am blessed to have been educated by many teachers over the years, beginning from my time in Ai Tong School then moving on to Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, before completing my undergraduate medical education at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Back then, my co-curricular activities included NPCC and Chinese Chess. I am grateful to all my teachers past and present for the valuable knowledge, skills and attitudes that they have imparted to me over the years. As such, I strongly believe in “paying it forward” by mentoring and inspiring the next generation.

My Happiness Formula

“My personal happiness formula is encapsulated in the acronym EGO, which stands for Expectations, Gratitude and Optimism.”

Expectations

The lower my expectations, the higher the potential for greater happiness.

Gratitude

I am very thankful and grateful for all my blessings and the help I receive.

Optimism

I always think of the positive, and reframe the negative.
